Algood Man Shot Friday Morning, New Mexico Man Jailed

An Algood man is in stable condition at Vanderbilt Medical Center after being shot at Cookeville’s LaQuinta Inn Friday morning.

31-year-old Justin Michael Payne had been shot three times in the upper torso. A second male had also been shot but his injuries were minor, according to Cookeville Police reports.

Police arrested 36-year-old Christian James Schlenker, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Schlenker charged with two counts of aggravated assault. He was transported to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and is being held on a $450,000 bond.

Police responded at approximately 5:00am Friday morning. The investigation continues. Police are asking anyone who might have information on the incident to call the Cookeville Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
