Jackson County

Do not miss the Tuesday cutoff to register to vote for this year’s primary election.

Jackson County Election Commission Administrator Clay Thaxton said eligible voters can register at the local election commission and online.

“Basically, being 18 and a resident of the county. If you have a felony conviction, we will have to get your rights restored as far as to be able to register to vote,” Thaxton said. “That is basically it. Being a citizen and a resident of the state.”

Thaxton said voters can also apply for absentee ballots if they feel uncomfortable going to the polls. Jackson County has seen an increase in mail ballots this year. The last day to request for an absentee ballot is July 30th.

“We have definitely seen an increase in them,” Thaxton said. “It is nothing crazy yet, but we have seen an increase so far.”

Early Voting will begin on July 17th and run through August 1st. The election starts August 6th. Thaxton said registration for voting always increases the year of a presidential election.

Voter registration applications can be picked up in person at your county election commission office, county clerk’s office, public library and register of deeds office. To see if you are eligible for absentee voting, visit

Thaxton said if a voter has any questions on the location of polls to call their local election commission.
