Cookeville City Council unanimously passed a resolution Thursday night supporting the city’s police department.
“(The council) continues to have full faith and confidence in the law enforcement agencies providing service to the citizens of Cookeville,” Mayor Ricky Shelton read from the resolution. “(We) recognizes that professional law enforcement is NOT synonymous with those individuals that choose to abuse their authority or employ brutality.”
The resolution committed the council to maintain its support of the department as well as commit financial resources to the department. Cookeville Police, according to the resolution, have also maintained strong accountability to the people of the city.
About a dozen officers stood in the back of the council chambers as Shelton read the resolution. It recognized the the Cookeville Police Department has maintained accreditation since 1998 through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement.
Council Member Dr. Charles Womack said the department has been at the forefront of protecting citizens.
“Being the first in the state to have NARCAN available, it was the first in the state to have AEDs in the police cars, it was the first in the state to have body cameras,” Womack said.
The resolution also recognized the work of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol and Tennessee Tech Police in protecting local citizens.
