Mask requirements for Tennessee courthouses and court clerk’s offices go into effect starting Monday.

Cookeville City Court Clerk Cheryl Chambers said before the mandate, most people were already wearing masks into the building .

“We have encouraged people to wear their mask to court the whole time, and they have,” Chambers said. “There have been a lot of people wearing mask that are just coming into to the building to do other business.”

Chambers said the Cookeville Courthouse and offices will provide masks for any person entering without one. So far, finding masks have not been an issue.

“The state of Tennessee has donated some to us,” Chambers said. “The court has some donated from TEMA. Everyone has been generous, and we are very appreciative of that.”

When you enter the courthouse, a greeter will be present to ensure all entering people are wearing a mask. Chambers said entry will be denied to all people not wearing a mask.

According to the order from the Tennessee Supreme Court, children under 12 and persons with breathing issues are not required to wear masks.
