The Overton County Election Commission feels prepared for the August 6 election.

Administrator Craig Story said he encourages residents to take advantage of early voting.

“We’ve been preparing for this for quite some time,” Story said. “We had a municipal election back in June so we were able to kinda get a few kinks worked out maybe and get prepared for this one.”

Story said during Thursday’s meeting, the commission prepared voting machines for inspection and gave a school of instruction for election workers.

The election commission and county health department have teamed together to ensure election worker and voter safety. Story said ensuring safety precautions is new but the commission is doing the best they can.

“Typically we do the early voting in our office, and we have moved it into the gymnasium here in the community center,” Story said. “We have a much bigger area, we’re able to spread out more, we’re able to do some social distancing things. You’ll see our workers in PPE, we’ve got hand sanitizer at the door, and we encourage voters to wear a mask.”

Story said he wants voters to feel confident to traditionally vote. He said the election commission has not seen an increase in absentee voters.

The last day to early vote is August 1.
