Clay County is one of three counties in the Upper Cumberland with a census response rate below 50 percent.
County Executive Dale Reagan said it is critically important for residents to complete the census.
“Everyone that we fail to count that’s over a period of ten years (the census is done every ten years), on an average that’s about $1,000 per person per year,” Reagan said. “If you miss one person that’s over a period of ten years that’s $10,000. If you miss 100 folks that’s $100,000, so it’s very important.”
Reagan said completing the census could allow the county more federal funding opportunities for more projects. He said the last census response rate ten years ago ended at 58 percent.
Completing the census is easier than ever, Reagan said. He hopes response numbers will be better than the last census to make Clay County count.
“That’s what we’re trying to get everybody aware of that, you can go online and do it now,” Reagan said. “We certainly want to extend out there our senior population that our senior director has reached out to all our seniors and the ones she’s been able to contact has been able to tell them that she would actually help them, and any of us will.”
