Smithville Adults & 2 Youth Injured In I-40 Accident

Three Smithville residents were injured when a Knoxville man tried to make a u-turn on Interstate 40 Friday afternoon.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol charged 31-year-old Blake Taylor of Knoxville with DUI, reckless driving, driving with an open container, and possession of drug paraphernalia after the accident near mile marker 277.

Taylor sat on the right shoulder of the westbound lanes, attempting to make a u-turn to travel eastbound. He pulled into the path of 42-year-old Esperanza Bernardo of Smithville. Bernardo was travelling with a 15-year-old juvenile and a nine-year-old. Bernardo and the 15-year old suffered injuries but were not transported by EMS.

According to the THP preliminary report, Baxter Police and the Tennessee Highway Patrol assisted with the accident around 12:45pm.
