Saturday kicks off the week long Keep Putnam County Beautiful cleanup.
Putnam County Clean Commission Executive Coordinator Rob Wright said small groups are looking to make up for cleanups missed because of the pandemics and the effects of the March tornadoe.
“The big thing is, there’s a lot of litter around and we need to come together as a community to try to get rid of some of this litter,” Wright said. “Especially after the tornadoes, a lot of it got strewn across the town.”
Wright said the plan is to clean areas around the tornado zone, Cookeville Regional Medical Center, Main Street, Rail Trails and more.
Boy Scouts, Fortis Institute nursing students, church groups and TTU groups will take part. Wright said the small groups are mostly organized, because of concerns over putting random volunteers together in a team.
“The chances of taking random volunteers and putting them in a group together, there are some challenges,” Wright said. “With the whole COVID thing, so that’s why we are working with groups first.”
That does not mean citizens cannot help, even if they are not a part of this cleanup. Wright said residents can reach out if they notice an area that needs attention.
“You live somewhere out in the county and you just know that this area is getting worse and worse they can go on our website,” Wright said. “We actually have a reporting system where they can let us know that there’s an illegal dump going on.”
Wright said if citizens see illegal dumping while it is happening to contact local law enforcement. Wright said depending on how many people want to volunteer, the Putnam County Clean Commission will try and get volunteers an area to clean.
