The Susan G. Komen Foundation is offering a virtual Walk Where You Are program to help men and women suffering from breast cancer.
Anyone can walk individually or as a group to raise money for breast cancer research and women in need of mammogram screenings.
CEO Dawn Eaton said this is a replacement for the annual walks in Nashville and Chattanooga, which were cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.
“You can walk anytime, any day, and raise money at the same time,” Eaton said. “People can start a Facebook page, they can get their family members and friends to participate and raise funds all the while knowing that it is going to help the more vulnerable population that perhaps can’t afford the services.”
Eaton said offering a local option could raise as much or more donations as their annual walks. Last year $500,000 was raised.
Twenty-five percent of donations go to breast cancer research, while the rest is for women who can’t afford a mammogram. Eaton said since the pandemic started, the foundation has received many calls from women who have lost their insurance.
“Very proudly we can tell them where they can go for free mammograms,” Eaton said. “We also offer a treatment assistance program where we can offer women up to $300 per person per year to help pay for either medicine, a baby sitter, transportation services, etc.”
An app launched in August allowing an easy way to track steps, post photos, and earn badges.
