Putnam County is increasing its $1.00 tire disposal fee if residents get rid of more than eight tires a year.
“What we’ve done now is added 29 cents to that, so now it will be a $1.29,” Putnam County Solid Waste Director Keith Street said. “That will generate, going on last year’s tonnage numbers, about an extra $30,000 in revenue to help pay for this disposal.”
Street said said the number of old tires up for disposal and the increase in county population drove this decision. Street said an extra $1.16 per four tires will provide a boost to revenue.
“Corporate out of Pennsylvania, they haul all our tires down to Nashville for recycling,” Street said. “We don’t actually bury anything in the landfill.”
Street said last year 1,700 tons of tires were disposed of. However, Street said these tires are not disposed of in Putnam County.
“We’re trying not to lose any money,” Street said.
Another $30,000 will be generated from an agreement with Liberty Tire Recycling to lower its disposal costs for licensed tire dealers. The agreement will drop disposal costs from $91.62 per ton to $65 per ton for licensed tire dealers.
