The biggest event in Overton County is cancelled due to COVID-19.
Fall-O-Ween brings in as many as 7,000 people into downtown Livingston for this completely free event. Livingston-Overton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Shannon Cantrell said she knows it’s an unpopular decision but said she had to put the community’s safety first.
“We were just kind of left with a very difficult decision,” Cantrell said. “You know we had to think about the health of our children and our citizens before we did anything else.”
With an increase in positive cases in Overton County, Cantrell said leaders had to make this decision. Overton County has a COVID-19 Task Force, made up with varying perspectives.
“Our city and county mayor, and then our nursing home and hospital, and school board and 911,” Cantrell said.
However, there is good news for kids. Cantrell said on October 17th the Halloween movie Hocus Pocus is playing in Central Park, to try and make up for losing this event. There is also going to be a kids costume contest.
“We’re trying to improvise a little bit, do something a little bit on the smaller scale,” Cantrell said. “Something that we can control and limit the amount of people that come into Central Park.”
As for revenue, Cantrell said there is none for the chamber. Although, Cantrell said there is an economic hit to Livingston’s downtown businesses.
