Two Algood intersections have qualified for stop signs after a traffic study.
City Administrator Keith Morrison said 4th and Main Street near city hall will become a three-way stop, and 2nd and Main Street will become a four-way stop. Morrison said 4th and Main is experiencing traffic and timing issues and 2nd and Main has a visibility issue. Morrison said an engineering consultant has laid out what the city should do.
“He give us a full blown print for stop signs, approaching signs, cross walks and how we need to sign the intersections,” Morrison said. “How we need to sign the intersections to make them function appropriately and I have those prints and we will be ordering signs and starting to put those in place.”
Morrison said the stop sign near the Algood Farmer’s Market is where the delays on fourth are occurring. Morrison said driving North on Second Avenue is causing the visibility problems.
“As you approach Main Street to turn West going out of town, at that stop sign at the farmer’s market there’s a delay, because if there’s a lot of traffic you can’t get out there,” Morrison said. “At Second and Main the sight distance became the issue, not so much the traffic or the delay, but not being able to see from Second Avenue North as you approach Main Street.”
Morrison said the next steps are installing the signs and doing some striping work. Morrison said he hopes to have this work finished within three weeks.
