Liquor By The Drink Passes in Algood

Liquor by the drink has passed in Algood with 64 percent of the vote.

Algood Liquor by the Drink Committee Head Tiffany Anton said she was surprised by the margin and her older committee members had doubts this effort could pass. Anton said pressing the issue of economics over alcohol before the election, helped secure the victory.

“I didn’t want to do it the quiet way, I wanted to do it loud and proud and make some noise, and really not be afraid of touching on some issues of DUI’s and alcohol,” Anton said. “I wanted to really make this what it was really about, it’s tax dollars and restaurants and variety.”

Anton said she believes the vote signals support for Algood residents wanting to invest in progress and development.

“The vote really wasn’t about alcohol, we talked about this earlier in the week or last week,” Anton said. “The vote was about restaurants, bringing restaurants to the city and being able to provide a little more variety for the city of Algood.”

This vote will allow establishments to sell and dispense alcoholic beverages with an alcohol level at 8 percent or greater. The ballot measure passed with 1,209 votes for and 677 against.
