Results Challenge Only Path to Jamestown Recount

Fentress County Election Commission Administrator Joey Williams said the only way a recount will happen is if the certified results are challenged.

Tuesday night, Jamestown voters approved the package store referendum by two votes with 335 votes for the issue and 333 against. Williams said the work starts Wednesday to start matching up the numbers, and the commission has until the third Monday after the election to certify the results.

“We take our applications and match those to the machine tapes and then match that to the register on the books and make sure all those numbers match,” Williams said. “Once that’s done, we start entering all that information into the computer.”

Williams said the election board will view and vote on certifying the results after they’ve been reviewed by the state.

“We send the numbers to Nashville, Nashville prints us up our certification,” Williams said. “Our five board members meet and we present that to the board and they certify the election.”

Williams said any opposition to the package store referendum then has their chance to challenge the results. Williams said this is the way all 95 Tennessee Counties trigger a recount.

“If anyone wishes to challenge that, any group, organization or individuals, they have five business days to challenge that,” Williams said.

As of Wednesday morning, Williams said Tuesday night’s unofficial results stand and remain unofficial until they’ve been certified. The referendum would allow liquor stores within city limits.
