Gainesboro Applying For Grant To Highway 56 Turn Signal

The town of Gainesboro wants to add a turn signal to state route 56 at West Hull Avenue through a T-DOT grant.

The Board of Alderman Thursday approved applying for the grant. Town Recorder Brenda Spivey said the current traffic light lacks a signal making afternoon traffic a problem

“Yes, it is an issue,” Spivey said. “Especially, in the afternoon when the kids get out of school or the factories get out over here. Yes, it is a problem.”

Five school zone signs would also be installed on road leading to Gainesboro Elementary School. Town Clerk Lisa Dodson said the $50,000 grant is enough to cover the cost of the project.

“We would not be out any money at all,” Dodson said. “The turn signal would give the people an opportunity to turn up the hill. It would also provide five lights that would be on the ground to let people know it is a school zone. One coming in from each highway, Gibson Hollow, coming down the hill from Main Street and coming down the hill from McCoinsville. It is not a guarantee we will get it though.”

Alderman Travis Agee gave the motion to apply with Alderman Ricky Head giving the second.

“It is not costing us anything,” Agee said. “I mean it will be beneficial I am sure with the extra light. I will make a motion to go ahead and proceed with the application.”

The grant is due December 2nd.
