New Bus Awning Approved For Rickman Elementary

The Overton County Board of Education has approved replacing the awning at Rickman Elementary’s bus drop off area.

Director of Schools Mark Winningham said a storm last spring damaged the canopy to the point of being irreparable.

“Well, it was the sheet metal and the frame, as well,” Winningham said. “It twisted the frame of the awning, so that is why we are having to replace the whole thing instead of repairing it.”

The new awning will cost about $13,000 to install. School Board member Ricky Dodson asked if insurance would cover some of the costs. Winningham said the school did not act fast enough to have some of the costs paid.

Winningham said the work should only take a few weeks to complete once approved by the county commission.

“We will contact the company that won the bid and that would be determined by them,” Winningham said. “I would imagine it would be relatively quickly.”

This replacement is not a budgeted item and will come out of the fund balance.
