UC Habitat for Humanity Blesses 85th Home

Upper Cumberland’s Habitat for Humanity completed its 85th house blessing Tuesday.

Family and friends of the Soulet family gathered to write messages of love on the studs before the house is completed. Executive Director Pam Ealey said the Soulet home located at West End Park will accommodate three generations.

“They will always have those special moments of people’s thoughts and prayers for them,” Ealey said. “And sometimes the home owners go around and take pictures of them just kind of to remember what is written in the walls. Just a really special event.”

Ealey said the three bedroom, two bath home is the 13th home of a 50 lot subdivision. The Soulets will buy the home with an affordable mortgage with the funds returning back to Habitat for Humanity.

“The Soulets will be buying this house with an affordable mortgage, and we hold the mortgage,” Ealey said. “A lot of people do not realize how this works. So that mortgage comes back to habitat to fund more homes.”

Ealey said the building is an energy star home to help the family pay for minimal utilities. The home is ADA compliant for two members of the family.

“It will be fully handicap accessible. Both bathrooms will have roll in showers to accommodate their needs,” Ealey said. “(…) It is very well prepared for them. If they have never been to a habitat home, they are beautiful homes. We just do not waste any extra space. They are what the family needs.”

The Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity is only the second energy star certified builder in the region.
