Monterey To Consider Expanding Meadow Creek Park

PurchaseThe town of Monterey is considering the purchase of a seven acre lot to expand its Meadow Creek Park.

The land includes a scenic waterfall and natural bluffs for rock climbing. Mayor J.J. Reels said the land presents an opportunity to add more attractions to the park east of the lake.

“We are just looking to expand our ability to attract rock climbers and naturalists and open some hiking areas up,” Reels said. “On the other side of the park across the lake, there is a lot of area over there that can be hiked.”

The asking price for the lot sits at $49,000. Funding for the purchase would come from the Standing Stone Health Care Fund. Reels said he will seek approval from the Board of Alderman during December’s meeting to negotiate with the property owner.

“We are going to talk about it at the board meeting,” Reels said. “If they give me approval as mayor to approach the property owner, then we will go that route. If they do not approve it, then we will continue on what we are doing for the rest of our property.”

Discussion of the purchase was originally set for November’s planning committee meeting. Since the meeting was special called, a motion could not be made to add to the agenda.
