Byrdstown Sets Date For Spring Fishing Tournament

Byrdstown has set the date for its spring fishing tournament at Sunset Marina for the weekend of March 13th.

Mayor Sam Gibson said he planned the annual fishing tournament around the big competitions that Dale Hallow brings in each year.

“It has been going on now for quite a few years,” Gibson said. “We look forward to having about 100 boats again. We normally, a couple years ago in the spring before COVID, we had 107 I think it was boats.”

Gibson said fishing events like this are a major part of the city’s tourism with businesses seeing increased spending. Applications to compete will be available sometime in January. The money from the applications go towards cash prizes for participants.

“Hopefully while they are here, they are going to spend some money, and we are going to reap the benefit of that part,” Gibson said. “Other then that, we just provide that to try and get people coming. Hopefully, they come once and enjoy it and catch some fish. Then come back again.”

Gibson said the tournament reaches competitors across the state and nation. Participants are in charge of having their own boats and fishing gear. The city council Monday approved the date.
