The Jackson County Central Fire Department is looking for new volunteers to add to its team.

Positions range from active fire fighting to coordinating fundraisers. Chief Jeff Conn said the department always has spots available for any capacity of work.

“We have a good sized roster,” Conn said. “Part of the problem with the volunteer side is everybody has to have a job and work and that ties us down sometimes. During the day, we don’t have as many that can respond.”

Conn said the department pays for any required training for those interested in fire response. Other available positions include vehicle accident responders and firetruck drivers.

“We are always looking for more help,” Conn said. “Besides fighting fires, we run vehicle wrecks, medical calls. We do all of our own fundraising. We do PR events and go to the schools. Just always looking to get people involved in their community.”

Conn said with COVID limiting activities, volunteer opportunities like this are hard to come across.

“Seeing when I can help somebody and just seeing the joy it brings them,” Conn said. “Just the little things. Not always fighting fires. Sometimes we help elderly people up out of the floor and seeing how thankful they are. Just being able to help somebody and feel like you make a difference goes a long way.”

Conn said members meet monthly, on every second Tuesday. Conn said the department also participates in regular in-house training sessions.
