The Upper Cumberland Chapter of Military Officers Association of America made the decision to donate to a special cause.
Retired Navy Commander Mark Pfaffenroth said during their Christmas party, a member’s wife suggested donating to the Tennessee Fisher House in Murfreesboro. Pfaffenroth said they raised over $1,000 towards the the Fisher House, that many Upper Cumberland MOAA members utilize.
“A place where families whose spouses are being treated at the veteran’s hospitals can actually come, and they live for free,” Pfaffenroth said. “They don’t have to worry about meals and other things. They can just concentrate on their family member that’s at the hospital.”
Pfaffenroth said the donations will go towards the Tennessee Fisher House’s general fund, and MOAA helped contribute to other past projects. He said the decision to donate, instead of giving gifts, is just one part of the work MOAA does for veterans.
“Our MOAA chapter donates a lot of money and time to various programs, including the local JROTC programs at the various high schools here,” Pfaffenroth said. “We also support a lot of the different veteran’s groups and veteran’s charities.”
Pfaffenroth said nearly half of the entire MOAA chapter were in attendance when the donation decision was made. This Fisher House is located on the campus of the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center.
