The finishing touches are being made to dedicate Baxter’s Reflection Park on March 3rd, exactly one year after the March tornado.
The memorial near Baxter Primary School will honor the lives of five children that died that day. Mayor Jim Martin said the only thing lacking before the event is the landscaping.
“It is going to be a beautiful park,” Martin said. “We’ve already got the pillars completed. There is probably going to be a monument for all of the children.”
Martin said the pillars are for an archway that states the park’s name at the entrance. A stone benche for each child will also be installed.
Martin said the area will be incorporated into a newly built amphitheater and a future playground nearby at Seminary Park. Work on the playground is set to begin in late April.
“Along with the Reflection Park, we got the $750,000 grant from BlueCross,” Martin said. “We had a meeting with BlueCross. It is going to be a beautiful addition to our park. There will be different area for children to play. It is going to be pretty close to Reflection Park.”
The amphitheater is also near both parks. Martin said enough space was left to accommodate crowds when COVID precautions lessen.
