Tech Celebrating Awesome Eagle’s 59th Birthday

Tennessee Tech is starting its weekend birthday celebration Friday for school mascot Awesome Eagle.

Spirit Program Coordinator Monica Hartsfield said students are invited to the birthday party at the Roaden University Center at 11:00 a.m.

“Awesome Eagle will be 59 years young,” Hartsfield said. “We are going to be doing a little bit of everything. On Friday, the cafeteria will be celebrating our main bird on campus. They are going to be having cupcakes and a little party for students on campus.”

Hartsfield said festivities continue at Tech’s basketball doubleheader Saturday with some surprise birthday activities. Hartsfield said fans might even get a special appearance from Grandpappy Eagle. Awesome Eagle’s birthday is officially on Valentine’s Day.

“We got a whole supporting crew that is really stoked and excited to play with Awesome,” Hartsfield said. “They’ve been around campus this year, and so if you come to the game, you might see some surprise mischief makers there.”

Tech’s mascot was first established in 1962 as the Gold Eagle. Then in 1975, the name switched to Evil Eagle for his daredevil stunts. The mascot later became Awesome Eagle in 1985 and has earned many accolades.

“Awesome Eagle started competing for UCA College Nationals back in the early 90’s,” Harsfield said. “(…) He started placing high ever since then. His first time out of the gates he brought in second place.”

Hartsfield said Awesome Eagle won back to back championships in 2014 and 2015. Hartsfiend said he has placed in the top five ever since then.
