Algood Methodist Church Taking Donations For Helping Hands

For the first time in nearly a year, the Algood Methodist Church is able to collect items for those in need.

Outreach Committee Chair Lee Ann Hall said church members will be at the church and ready to load their van with items for Helping Hands. Hall said there are a lot of items needed and helping hands tried to create care packages for those down on their luck.

“Include like some cleaners, that’s why they like the powdered detergent so they can divide things up for their boxes,” Hall said. “The dryer sheets, toothbrushes, toothpaste, things can be trial size or full size. Bar soaps are much easier to divide.”

Hall said they are also in need of diapers, pull ups and monetary donations to help people pay their bills. She said paying bills will be especially important with the pandemic and now the Winter weather.

“With people out of work, not being able to work,” Hall said. “Some of the items will help. The monetary donations that people make, they go to pay electric bills. This is gonna be a really hard time for everybody right now with everything that’s been happening with our weather. I do like the fact that they do ask that people pay what they can for their electric bill and then Helping Hands goes to the utility department.”

The Algood United Methodist Church closed during the pandemic and is just now reopening. Hall said being able to get back out to help has been a long time coming.

“Our congregation right now is just so small, so really and truly we haven’t been able to do anything like this since last March,” Hall said. “Right now we can’t do it on our own. So, we need the community to help, other churches to help. We really would like to make an impact but we can’t do it by ourselves, so we would really want our community to come out and show up for us.”

The Algood United Methodist Church is taking donations for Helping Hands from 9:00 AM until Noon in the churches parking lot. The address for drop off is 135 West Main Street in Algood.
