Cookeville Planning Department To Present Annual Report

The Cookeville Planning Department is preparing its annual report of 2020 to share with the Planning Commission.

Director Jon Ward said the yearly review includes the department’s work activities while also programming new projects for the future.

“We’re just looking at what we anticipate our major works projects will be,” Ward said. “We also ask the Planning Commission to bring anything they would like to see the planning department look at in the upcoming year. So, we will be looking at that in our February meeting.”

Ward said future improvements all depend on the final census numbers. These can range from the location and size of lots, streets, and utilities. Ward said the city’s growth will also determine any changes to zoning, which go towards the 2030 land use plan.

“We provide a report to the Planning Commission on our big work activities of the previous calendar year and what we are going to program as our work projects for the upcoming 2021 year, Ward said. “One of the big things we are looking at obviously is if a MPO transition occurs. That will be a significant amount of work for us here. And, we’re also working on a 2030 plan update.”

Metropolitan Planning Organizations are for areas of 50,000 people or more to maintain its own transportation plan. The city is currently a part of the Center Hill Rural Planning Organization for transportation planning.
