Contact Sports Return To Cane Creek Gym With New Hours

Contact sports made a return to Cookeville’s Cane Creek Gymnasium Monday.

Basketball and soccer have been excluded since COVID guidelines went into effect. Athletic Coordinator Lori Medlin said the community wanted the opportunity to return.

“It’s been almost a year for no contact sports,” Medlin said. “We’ve had pickle ball and volleyball as non-contact sports when we reopened back in June of last year, but basketball and soccer has almost been a year since the tornado hit last year.”

Medlin said COVID screens are still being carried out as you enter the building, but players do not have to wear masks while participating. Hours have also expanded to Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 1-6 p.m.

“Temperature checks at the front window,” Medlin said. “Please, wear a mask upon entering the facility and while you are not engaging in your sport. Only active participants are going to be allowed in the facility. As well as, a 50 person capacity limit at one time in the facility.”

Participants and observers will be temperature checked and asked basic health questions. Non-contact activities are continuing as normal with some classes being offered.

“Right now, we have a pickle ball clinic for beginners and intermediate players coming on Saturday from nine to 1,” Medlin said. “It is five dollars a person to come and take part.”

Gymnasium rentals for athletic-themed activities are resuming as well. Admission to enter the gymnasium is $1.
