Surveys for Putnam County students are going out this week to gauge interest for summer learning opportunities.

The surveys are for two, four-week learning camps that begins June 1st for K-8 students. Communication Supervisor Hannah Davis said the results will be used to determine locations and staffing.

“The Putnam County School System team is working together to really make this a learning camp,” Davis said. “A bridge camp to go in and really focus on the reading, math, physical activity and just having fun.”

Davis said surveys will be distributed mainly through email and social media. Davis said before and after school care is also available for participants registered through the system’s afterschool program.

“We want parents to complete that survey,” Davis said. “All parents, not just the ones that are interested. All parents to kind of let us know if they are interested, and we can prepare accordingly.”

There will be a Summer Learning Camp for students currently in Kindergarten- 4th grade, and a Bridge Camp for students currently in 5th-7th grade. Class will be in session four days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

“Learning loss and gaps can take place when events, like COVID-19, impact school learning. That is why the Tennessee Learning Loss Remediation and Student Acceleration Act is requiring that school districts offer summer programs to address those learning losses and gaps created by the pandemic,” Director of Schools Corby King said. “The survey being sent out next (This) week is important for every parent to complete.”

Davis said each Friday for the younger camp will be spent taken field trips that go hand in hand with learning. Students are not required to attend, but those registered will have attendance taken and a state-adopted pre and post assessment will take place.
