Rep. Sherrell Sponsoring Bill Reestablishing Elected School Superintendents

State Representative Paul Sherrell is sponsoring legislation that would bring back elected school superintendents.

Sherrell said the was a topic brought to him while campaigning in 2016. Sherrell said he had not taken action on this topic but recently people continued to approach him about bringing back elections.

“The people that I have spoken with, they just want to have that freedom back,” Sherrell said. “To be able to elect their superintendent of schools. Some people do and some people would probably like to stay like it is. So it just gives some freedom back to the people.”

In 1992 the Education Improvement Act was passed, requiring all school districts to appoint their superintendents by 2000. Sherrell said that allowing districts and counties to choose to elect is about providing what is best for students and faculty.

“Nothing against superintendents or against the school board, nothing against them,” Sherrell said. “But I’m trying to do what people have asked me to do.”

Sherrell said this would still provide counties an option to keep superintendent appointments. He said that was his focus, to reestablish local freedom of choice.

“If Putnam county wants to continue to appoint their superintendent of schools, they have that option to continue on just like it is,” Sherrell said. “If your county wants to have the freedom to elect their superintendent of schools they would have that freedom to elect.”

He is currently working to get the legislation on notice so it can go to the Subcommittee on Education.
