The Overton County School System exceeded its allotted 13 weather days with Monday’s missed day.

The system now plans to add two days to the end of the school year. Interim Director of Schools Donnie Holman said while the dates are not official, they will likely take place on May 27th and May 28th.

“I’ll talk to me principals, and I will talk to the school board,” Holman said. “And we will come up for the best solution that we can find, and then, we’ll make sure the word will get out with plenty of time for everyone to know, so that they can make plans or maybe people will have to alter plans a little bit.”

The Jackson County School System is facing a similar problem being one day over the quota. Director of Schools Kristy Brown said she plans to apply for a waiver from the state department of education to avoid an extended school year.

“I do know that there has been instances in the past when there has been a lot of illness or other natural disaster type situations that they have approved the waivers under certain circumstances,” Brown said. “So, I am fairly confident that they will approve it.”

Brown said if the waiver is declined, the school system would consider doing virtual make up days.

“Another option is to choose a day that we would usually not have school,” Brown said. “And with the technology that we have especially this year and what we have learned, that could be an option. The other option could be adding an additional day after the school year.”

Weather days are created by schools adding an additional 30 minutes to the school day each day.
