Overton Co. Accepting Kindergarten Registration Appointments

Overton County Elementary Schools are accepting kindergarten registration appointments.

K-6 Supervisor Melissa Savage said guardians can call their desired school to set up a conference call or an in-person time slot on Monday.

“On the day of the 12th, they need to bring in the birth certificate, social security card, immunization record,” Savage said. “And a physical if they have one.”

Savage said during in-person appointments, potential students will meet their kindergarten teacher and take an assessment to gauge their knowledge.

“They will arrive at the school, check-in to the office,” Savage said. “They will have designated rooms for the kindergarten registration, and the teacher will bring the family in and introduce themselves. Tell them things they need to know and will have packets to give them.”

Savage said for phone registrations, parents will have a time to call into the school and provide the needed information. Those students will take their entry test during the  phase in days at the beginning of the school year.

“At the beginning of the year, we have phase in days for kindergartners,” Savage said. “So, the kindergartners that do not take the screening test on registration date, they will take it on their phase in day first of the year in August. Usually, we allow the first week to two weeks where we just bring in small groups of four to five kindergartners a day, so they can get used to the school.”

In order to begin school, the child has to be five-years-old on or before August 15th. Savage said if a family misses registration, they can call the school for a student’s intent. Savage said those students will have the chance to register on August 4th.

Jackson County is registering kindergarten students on April 29th and May 5th, Pickett County on May 17th-19th.
