Two Cookeville Parks Set To Get Extra Shade For Residents

Cookeville will add new shade structures to two city parks.

Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said the city will add shade to the bleachers through eight structures at the Cane Creek SportsPlex. Three structures will be added at the Park View Skate Park. Woods said these structures would be covered by a soft material, similar to those at the Heart of the City Park.

“They protect the person from UV Rays and also just provide a good amount of shade,” Woods said. “But they can be colorful, we haven’t decided and finalized what colors that we would want to put there.”

Woods said the cost for the 11 shade structures is $75,551.

Woods said at the Sportsplex, these structures would provide shade at the four large fields. Woods said he anticipates them being delivered in six to eight weeks, and installation would begin as soon as staff become free from other projects.

“In some areas of the playground or at the skate park or at the sportsplex it does provide some protection from the direct sunlight and makes things a little bit cooler,” Woods said. “And potentially also gives you a place to go when the rain comes on that you’re not prepared for.”

Woods said that the structures have two different designs. He said that some would be four-corner supported structures with a hip type roof and the others are supported on one side and then stretches out with no support on the other side.
