Two Sparta convenience stores have been suspended from selling alcohol for one year after being caught in a sting operation.
Sparta Police Department conducted the compliance checks. Alcorn’s Market and Dixie Mart both sold alcohol to an undercover officer without checking for identification.
The managers of each establishment told the Sparta Beer Board that employees will be properly trained to prevent any other incidences. Mayor Jeff Young said if the businesses repeat the offense during the suspension, the city will revoke their beer licenses.
Along with the probation, the board decided to enforce a $1,500 fine for each business. Young said the punishment is consistent with past offenses that have occurred in the city.
