Starting on Monday Cookeville will be smoke testing the sanitary sewer system in various locations, including the Deberry Heights area.
Testing is done through a non-toxic smoke to search for storm and ground water entering the sanitary sewer system. If residents have defective or unused plumbing and drains, smoke may enter the home.
If traces of the smoke or odor enter the property, it is an indication that gases and odors from the sewer can also enter. Odors and gasses from the sewer can be unpleasant and a health hazard to occupants.
Residents are being advised to pour water down any unused drains to fill the trap, preventing smoke from entering the home. Identifying the location of the smoke entering the building and correcting the problem is urgently advised.
The correction of any defects in pipes and sewers on private property is the responsibility of the owner. Door hangers will be distributed to properties affected by the testing approximately 24-48 hours prior to smoke testing.
