Sparta plans to purchase new infrared cameras and extrication stabilization equipment for the city fire department.
The city’s budget has $5,000 for the cameras and $6,000 for the extraction gear, also known as cribbing. Fire Chief Kirk Young said both are necessary purchases to replace aging tools.
“It will make it safer for the volunteers and paid guys to use this equipment as far as the cribbing goes,” Young said. “And also, the cameras, the imaging cameras will be newer and better quality.”
Young said the cribbing the fire department currently uses is wood, so the department looks to purchase a plastic version for longevity. Young said the equipment would be stored on a rescue truck to readily extract people from vehicles in the event of an accident.
Young said the department is on a waiting list to receive the two imaging cameras. Young said there is no time frame for when the equipment will be serviceable due to unknowns in manufacturing and delivery.
