Bill Rutherford is the new DeKalb County Veterans Service Officer.
Rutherford succeeds the late Paul Cantrell, who served for some 40 years. Rutherford said he accepted the position to bring benefits to veterans and their families.
“I served in South Korea in the 70’s on the DMZ with the Marine Corp of the third marine division,” Rutherford said. “I just saw what people struggle with what they call freedom. We are very fortunate and blessed here in our country, and I just felt the need to continue to serve.”
Rutherford said he can assist veterans with compensation plans, housing and medical care. Rutherford said the service office is located in the DeKalb County Courthouse.
“There’s a need for our veterans,” Rutherford said. “With the Vietnam veterans, Korean War veterans aging out, World War II veterans aging out. I believe there is a need with assisting them and filing claims with Veteran Affairs.”
Rutherford said the county mayor contacted him about taking the position, knowing Rutherford served for six years in the military. Rutherford fully took over veteran services after 80 hours of training.
“If you feel you have a claim, don’t hesitate to contact your Veteran Service Officer,” Rutherford said. “There are a lot of benefits out there, and there are a lot of veterans not taking advantage of it or not aware of it. I encourage them to go look for answers and let us help you.”
