Monterey Approves Preliminary Readings Of Special Event Beer Permits

The Monterey Board of Aldermen approved the first and second readings of the town’s amended alcoholic beverage ordinance for special events.

City Attorney Will Mullins said the amendment will allow individuals to apply for permits to allow alcoholic beverage consumption at special events.

“Individuals that can apply are people that already have an alcohol ordinance,” Mullins said. “Or you’re a charitable organization. You have to apply with the beer board, you have to be selected to hold that special event, and the beer board will approve that.”

Mullins said the alcohol consumption will be contained in a specific zone marked by city police. Mayor JJ Reels said the alderman will have a third reading on the ordinance at their meeting next month.

Mullins said the alderman created their ordinance amendments based on those of surrounding cities, such as Cookeville and Sparta. He said they formulated the ordinance to fit the desires of Monterey.

“One thing is that when you have multiple organizations applying for an event that could apply per the ordinance,” Mullins said. “They voted on it that if there were multiple organizations then they would go into a random computer generator, and the random generator would select the people from there. ”

Mullins said that although Monterey will host a country concert this fall, the permits are not applicable at the event.
