Sparta Life Care Center Taking Recipes For Alzheimer Cookbook

Sparta’s Life Care Center is bringing back its cookbook to raise money for Alzheimer’s of Tennessee.

Limited Memory Unit Clinical Coordinator Shelia Jared said the goal is to raise $10,000. Jared said the idea started in the facility with recipes saved from Alzheimer patients and cherished memories the dish brings back.

“This year it’s about that also but it’s about the community,” Jared said. “Staff, the surrounding communities are also putting recipes in, family members and also residents with Alzheimer, dementia and even the caregivers.”

Jared said that when recipes are submitted, people can include three lines about what makes the recipe special. She said her memory is with her grandmother, who is the reason she works at the Life Care Center.

“There’s a chocolate gravy recipe that she would always make for us when we were over there,” Jared said. “That’s really how it came about and I thought what a neat idea to have everybody’s recipe in there and memories of that. Food and memories… it brings all that back.”

Jared said the community can bring their recipes into Life Care Center and drop them off with the receptionist. She said people have until August 15 to contribute before publishing.

“They should be here by mid-October, they will make great Christmas gifts,” Jared said. “That’s how a lot of them three years ago they got family members one for a Christmas gifts and stuff like that, but yes August 15 is the deadline for the recipes.”

If submitting a recipe for someone who has passed away, please include a cross on the recipe by the loved ones name. All of the money raised from the cookbooks will go to Alzheimer’s of Tennessee. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit Tennesseans.
