Steak Cook-off Association Coming To Algood Saturday

Professional and amateurs alike will gather in Algood Saturday to see who can cook the perfect steak.

The Steak Showdown of the Steak Cook-off Association beginning at 10:00 a.m. Event Sponsor Milt Collins said the winner will have a chance to compete in the World Championship event in Texas next year.

“It is a real good chance to see what is going on at a professional steak cook-off,” Collins said. “I say professional. There’s a bunch of people that travel a lot and put a lot of miles on their vehicle and travel all over the country, but this is wide open to amateurs, backyard cooks and anybody that wants to. It is very affordable, and it’s something for a lot of people to get into competitive cooking.”

Collins said participants will be judged on five categories: appearance, doneness, taste, tenderness and texture. Collins said competitors will select two rib eyes provided by the event and may use any heat source to make a medium cooked steak.

“People will be able to see everything that is going on,” Collins said. “You get to see the process that these cooks go through to make these special steaks, and then, they go inside to the judges where the judges will get their chance to evaluate them and score them.”

Collins said some 45 cooks are expected to compete from multiple states. The event will last until 5:30 p.m. at the Algood baseball facility on 4th Avenue.

“The weather is going to be beautiful” Collins said. “A little bit of this humidity will be gone, and the forecast looks like a wonderful day for a steak cook-off.”

Collins said cash prizes are prepared for the top 10 finishers. Collins said all remaining funds from entry fees will go towards the ALS Foundation. Collins said all steak enthusiasts still have time to register until the end of the week.
