New Algood Flag Football League Kicks Off Week 2 This Sunday

A new rec football league has began in Algood.

It’s the Any Given Sunday Flag Football League. Commissioner Frank Rojas said he wanted to make his own league after other local associations stopped playing.

“Week one was a great success,” Rojas said. “A lot of people came up to me as far as team captains, players and were very happy and pleased with the outcome of it. We did actually have some additional people come up and just watch the games.”

Rojas said games are played every Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Algood park. Rojas said the plan is to make the league bigger as time goes on.

“The goal is to eventually bring it to 12 or 15 teams in the surrounding areas,” Rojas said. “We’re not just looking at bringing on the Putnam County area. We would like to bring teams from the Crossville area, Monterey area and surrounding areas.”

Rojas said each squad is made up of 10 to 15 players. Rojas said the seven team league will play until the October championship game.

“The more and more we get increasing teams as more people get familiar with the league, we’re looking at possibly extending that out,” Rojas said. “But at the moment right now, you’re looking at two months.”

Rojas played football most of his life and started playing flag football about four years ago. Rojas said he started in Crossville and later played in Cookeville before starting Any Given Sunday.

Rojas works along with two other co-commissioners, Shawn Garrett and Jimmy Green, to help with operations.
