Customers of the Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation will elect their district’s board members this weekend.
CEO Jennifer Brogdon said the power company serves as a cooperative, meaning it is a democratic organization controlled by members.
“We have an election every year,” Brogdon said. “We have at least three seats that get up for election on our nine member board on a rotational basis. So this year, we actually have three districts.”
Brogdon said having elections for a member owned company is common, especially in rural areas. Brogdon said the elected directors meet once a month to set policies and make decisions.
“Such as how bills are paid, having a pre-payment program, billing and collections,” Brogdon said. “Policies about deposits, terminations of electric service. They also set rules and regulations such as inspections and right of access.”
Brogdon said voting starts Friday and runs until Saturday at most district offices. The only exception being District 1 in Carthage. Brogdon said the voting location moved to 907 Main Street.
Members in Clay, DeKalb, Fentress, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Smith and White Counties can all vote.
