The Jackson County School District has been recognized as one of only five Reading 360 Model Districts in Tennessee.
Director of Schools Kristy Brown said the recognition is for a clear and strong focus on early literacy skills. Brown said this now means that teachers across the state will learn from her teachers.
“Some of our teachers will be submitting model lessons, video lessons,” Brown said. “That can be used to supplement or to show model lessons that are a strong teaching in reading.”
Brown said that along with the recognition, the system was awarded $300,000 for the achievement. Brown said that money will be reinvested in early literacy, teacher training and course materials.
She said this just strengthens the foundation of Literacy in Jackson County.
“The hard work that our teachers have put in to teaching these students regardless of our circumstances,” Brown said. “Even our teachers and parents who are still working and still studying and learning as much as they can in a challenging year like that. I really think that everybody has come together here and made this happen for our students and I’m really proud.”
Brown said the system was forward thinking on literacy and the investments have paid off.
“Our board of education has made a significant investment in that over last few years,” Brown said. “So it’s great to see the efforts of our teachers and our students recognized in this way.”
According to the state, some of the videos recorded for Reading 360 will be featured on Tennessee’s six PBS stations. Bristol Tennessee City Schools, Lebanon Special School District, Milan Special School District, and Williamson County Schools were also selected.
