Monterey To Replace Water Line On West Stewart Avenue

Monterey will replace some 725 feet of water line on West Stewart Avenue near South Walnut Street.

Engineer Nathaniel Green said that the bid with W&O Construction would cost the city approximately $15,116.

“If we were to bid that right now say by itself, you’d be looking somewhere around $50,000 to do that particular line,” Green said. “If we had bid it in with this project over here on the ARC you’d be looking somewhere around $40-something thousand. So I thought that was a pretty good price.”

Green said that W&O bid their pricing per foot half of what other similar projects are costing. He said that the two-inch galvanized water line to turn into a four-inch PVC line.

Green said that the work will not cost homeowners. He said the line has been on the water line replacement list for several years.

“It’ll have to be done eventually,” Green said. “We’ve applied for it before in different things. In the last ARC, we applied for it, and then it got removed whenever the scope was reduced because we were basically trying to get down across the interstate and not go in that particular direction. I think we actually had talked about it at one time when we did the CBDG. It’s one that we know basically down at the end of it there are more repair clamps than pipes.”

Green said the taps would be for some nine houses as well as the wastewater plant. He said W&O gave a price of some $874 per reconnection as well as costs for supplies which could end up totaling upwards of $1,000. Green said there is a possibility that not every property will need a reconnection, which could lower costs.

Green said the sewer plant itself will not use much water from that line other than for restroom functions as they have their own plant water system that recycles water they treat.
