Van Buren Chili Cook Off And Auction Raising Money 4-H Members

Temperatures are dropping but stoves will be heating up in Van Buren County for its 4-H Chili Cook Off and Auction.

4-H Extension Agent Shelby Christian said there is still time to register and enter your recipe before October 2. Christian said there are four categories to judge, including original, spicy, white chicken chili and one for 4-H members.

“We will be able to give them samples of all of the chili that is readily available and the ones that have been entered,” Christian said. “They’ll be able to sample it, along with having a hot dog supper. So that way they can get a little bit of a taste of everything and also enjoy a dinner while they’re here.”

Christian said the cook off will be judged by locals and even a judge from the USDA. However, Christian said the night is not just about eating, local businesses around the region have made auction donations to support the kids.

“Even other 4-H agents who will be starting soon and then some in our office and just different people,” Christian said. “Everything we have in the auction has solely been donated which I appreciate more than beyond words. This helps with our 4-H program to bring in more money. So even the more donations we can get now until Friday, the better.”

Christian said this idea had been in the works to help 4-H members make the most of their experience. She said all the proceeds will go to scholarships helping kids attend camps and conferences.

“Those things are expensive and the more help we can get with that, the better,” Christian said. “Because all of the proceeds with this is going to go directly to them for those purposes and any other purpose that we solely need. All of this stuff is going to benefit them for the good.”

Christian said that anyone entering the competition needs to call the Van Buren County Ag Extension office or visit them on Facebook to register. She said it is $6 to attend and get a meal provided.

Doors open at 5:00 PM at the Van Buren County Agriculture Learning Center.
