The First United Methodist Church in Cookeville is holding its Angel’s Attic clothing distribution on Thursday.
Servant Ministry Director Tamika Parker said they have clothes for anyone in need of staying warm this winter. Parker said the clock is ticking before temperatures take a big drop.
“It does help give people confidence in themselves, that there’s people out there that care about them,” Parker said. “And then also that they can stay warm, if people are warm, we’re able to function better. So we’re trying to meet that need in the community.”
Parker said this has taken on a special importance this time of year because of the growing homeless population in Putnam County. Parker said that unfortunately, they cannot take donations like in the past.
“In prior times before COVID, we were able to take things all the time and store them,” Parker said. “But now we don’t have that option and we don’t have that space available. So anytime we have an event, we just take items the week before the event and then get them out to the community the very next week.”
Parker said the church tries to do the clothing distributions quarterly for people in need. She said since there are only four events a year, the church is keeping the distribution open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
“Nothing required, no proof of income or residency or anything,” Parker said. “We can only let so many people come through and process at a time because of COVID. Because it is an indoor event but we’ll try to process as many people, as fast as we can on Thursday.”
Parker said the best way to find the Angel’s Attic is by coming to the Spring Street side parking garage. Parker said the garage is next to Rocky Matlock’s Insurance Company.
