Upper Cumberland Workforce Development Board and Department of Human Services bringing a new child care initiative to the region.
The groups will host a October 6th seminar for those interested establishing their own child care facility. Workforce Board Member Amy Maberry said the program addresses two issues: family services and jobs.
“There is an entrepreneurial aspect that is creating jobs for people within our workforce, and then the other stone to that is that it is providing childcare for our workforce,” Maberry said. “So, we’re really getting a double benefit.”
DHS Director of Licensing Dana Glenn said a team will be present to provide the steps for someone to get licensed. Glenn said it is a good time to enter the profession with the available funding and resources.
“Potential providers will get to go through a small business academy that is specifically for child care,” Maberry said. “So, some people want to start child care centers, because they really love children. But, the business piece doesn’t come as natural.”
The event runs from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Cookeville American Job Center office. Maberry said the main piece a person should have is a passion to serve children.
“The other pieces are when we come in, and so, that’s what this seminar is designed for is to help people see the other aspects that come into owning a business running a licensed childcare facility,” Maberry said. “If you have that desire and that passion to serve children and serve family in this way, we can come beside you and help you.”
