UC Ag Extension Offices Holding Webinar Covering Booming Timber Market

Selling timber in a booming market is the theme of this month’s Extension Ag Talk Tuesday in the Upper Cumberland.

Overton Extension Agent Jason Garrett said this one of the first webinar topics to come to mind for the region to cover. Garrett said that Walnut, Oak and Hard Maple all have a high demand and can be found in the region.

“Know what you have, get someone to let you know what its worth, maybe take bids on it,” Garrett said. “There’s certain ways and this webinar will go through the processes of what best meets your needs of what you have, to get timber sold.”

Garrett said that next to cattle sales, timber is the second biggest commodity in Overton County. He said that participants can register for the 6:00 PM webinar by either calling their county ag office or by visiting tiny.utk.edu/timber to get the zoom link info.

He said the event will be hosted by UT-Knoxville Forestry Specialist Dr. David Merker.

“He’s going to go through the process of knowing when your timber is ready to harvest,” Garrett said. “How to contact individuals to evaluate your property and see what’s on it and what it’s worth. Then getting contracts to get it sold when you get loggers, timber harvesters to come into your property and how to work a deal out with them on what the timbers worth to get your product sold and get the land owner paid.”

Garrett said that the idea to do this webinar series was about continuing education through the pandemic.
