Putnam Seeing New Interest in Shoney’s Hill From Developers

Putnam County is seeing new interest from developers in the Shoney’s hill property off South Jefferson Avenue.

Mayor Randy Porter said there was some interest from buyers a year or two ago, but the appraisal was lower than commissioners were willing to consider. Porter said things have changed with the county’s real estate market booming.

“We’ve had renewed interest from several developers and people,” Porter said. “So, we’ve opened it back up and been taking offers from folks and still working on that.”

Porter said the plan is to have the highest offer finalized and ready to present to the county commission on Monday night. He said the 29 acres on Shoney’s hill would not include the radio tower, water tank or county buildings at the foot of the hill.

“It does not include the school bus garage or the county highway maintenance department that’s down next to Jefferson (Avenue),” Porter said. “That would be in separate parcel. We’re looking at building them a new facility down on Tennessee Avenue and by the time we get that done and they move and the county looks at selling that, that’s probably a year or two away.”

Porter said that he does not know what the developers would use the property for, saying the parcel is mostly tree covered.
