Overton Offering Employee, Elected Officials Life Insurance For First Time

Overton County will offer life insurance to employees and elected officials for the first time in its history.

The county commission approved offering up to $20,000 per month in life insurance. County Executive Ben Danner said that with difficulties increasing employee pay, improving the benefits package is the best bang for the county’s buck.

“It seems like in the past we’ve been a training ground for other counties,” Danner said. “They come here and train and then they go to other counties for pay. We’ve worked on that a lot over the last seven years and get pay a lot better than what it has been.”

Danner said that offering the life insurance policy will cost the county under $10,000 per year. He said the goal is to not only retain the quality employees the county has, but possibly bring back retired employees with experience.

“This is something where they might not qualify for an insurance policy their self,” Danner said. “So this gets a lot of people an insurance policy that may not have been able to get one. I hope that might bring back some people who have experience back into work in the county.”

Danner said that the amount of life insurance offered, depends on the insurance company’s sliding scale, based on employee age.
