Sparta Drive-In Hosting Free Alzheimer’s Awareness Documentary

Music as a tool to support Alzheimer’s patients. It’s the subject of the documentary Alive Inside.

The movie will be shown Saturday night at the Sparta Drive-In.

Sara Martin is the Family Caregiver and Evidence Based Assistant for the Area Agency on Aging and Disability. Martin said viewers will see personalized music reconnect those afflicted with Alzheimer’s or dementia to their memories.

“I hope that they can walk away with a better understanding of the disease itself,” Martin said. “And know that there are other avenues out there besides just medication.”

Martin said the film is meant to inspire, showing a social workers research become a reality. She said music can take someone who is non-verbal for years and bring back their speech.

“It’s important for the community to be aware of Alzheimer’s and other dementia’s,” Martin said. “Most of the time when they receive a diagnosis, the symptoms and cognitive impairment has already been there progressing. So getting information out to the community is very important.”

The movie is free, Gates are set to open at 5:30 PM and the first 100 people in will receive a free popcorn and drink.
