Culinary Kids Starting Early Through White County Extension Office Program

White County kids have a chance to build their cooking skills on Monday at the county Ag Extension Office.

4-H Youth Development’s Roseann Dodson said she takes kids through all the basic skills, from in the kitchen to at the grocery store. Dodson said that across the board, the favorite part for all ages is seeing their finished product.

My favorite part is watching them go through the recipe, learn the skills and then tasting it,” Dodson said. “and they’re like, ‘oh my goodness, this is so good Mrs. Roseann,’ and then I’ll say, I told you, be patient”

This Monday’s class will focus on creating holiday treats to share with their friends and family. Dodson said this can be the perfect class for a kid who might want to find a career in cooking or just learn about another culture through their taste buds.

Parents who want to register their child can call the White County Ag Extension office for details. The course will also be offered on the third Monday of the month.

“My goal is to teach them these things because they don’t teach it in schools anymore,” Dodson said. “This is a place for them that they can come out and learn these basic skills and also be creative with their own recipes.”

Dodson said it is also the perfect opportunity to sneak in some math and science education.

“Learning how to measure, fractions, cutting a recipe in half,” Dodson said. “What happens to raw foods when they get cooked, what makes their baked goods rise. So a lot of cool things that they get to learn.”

Dodson said she has kids participate from 4th up to 12th grade. She said kids will not just come away with cooking skills, they leave with life skills.
